TiresThis week has been about getting new tires on my car. See, last fall, on the first really icy evening, I took a corner too fast and slid into a curb and bent a rim. Now I know I should have had it replaced then (I can only imagine what the vibration has been doing to the front end) but I'm a procrastinator and it didn't really do too much unless you were driving the car between 80 and 90 km/h. A couple of weeks ago, bumped a curb pretty hard when I was parking and the tire wouldn't hold air for more than 2 days since then so it was really time to do something about it.
Last Monday, I decided I would go to Pick and Pull (an auto wrecker where you go pull your own used parts off their vehicles that are up on blocks) and get some new rims (one to replace the bent one and one to replace the "donut" spare, don't even get me started on trying to drive on one of those). I've never been to Pick and Pull but my dad told me I shouldn't have any problems so I took my tire iron and put on my helpless damsel face and braved the testosterone pit. I found the sort of car I was looking for and tried to loosen the lug nuts. But the wheels just spun around and I couldn't get enough torque to loosen the bolts. After about 10 minutes of frustrated cursing, a helpful fellow came by and showed me that if you put the emergency brake on, the wheels don't turn. Gratefully I loosened the bolts and he went on his way. I got all the nuts off and tried to pull the tire off. It wouldn't budge. I tried to pry it off with the crowbar part of the tire iron; no go. I kicked it; no go. I must have pulled and kicked and grunted and swore for 20 minutes. Sadly the helpful fellow seemed to have disappeared and there were no others to be had. In frustration I left them where they were and went to see if I could find another car. No dice. I came back to my rims and tried some more, still they wouldn't budge. I started poking around the car to see if I could find anything helpful. In the trunk there was a wheel and there was another one on the ground beside the car. Note to self: Sometimes it pays to look around.
Yesterday I bought tires and got them put on. Now for those brakes...
