Rapiers, Mice and Wedding Gowns
On Tuesday, I was reminded of one of the reasons I love Davyd.
My mom brought my nephew and niece (Devon and Cortney) into the city to go to the Odyseum and so she could do another fitting on my wedding gown. They picked me up after work and we went to the I-Max. It was okay, but the last several times I've gone I've been kinda disappointed; its not as good as I remember it being as a kid. The kids enjoyed it though and came out very excited. There was a fish tank (with a "Finding Nemo" in it) that we ogled for sometime. Then they saw the video games... I had a couple of Loonies so I let them play one game each. They chose a head to head car racing game. Cortney is a surprisingly good driver for a 6 year old. Once she got the hang of the controls and what the visual cues meant she was really good. Devon chose to drive a standard, and had a little more trouble but none the less did very well.
Do you remember the Mouse Trap that used to be in WEM? (Its the big sculpture thingy with the balls in it that are taken up a chain and then fall down different paths, hitting drums, bells, loop-the-loops, etc all the way down.) Anyway, it's outside the Odyseum now. We must have watched it for half an hour. I've always loved things like that.
On our way back to my house, we stopped at the petstore on Stony Plain Road. Its the most fabulous little place in the basement of a strip mall that has reptiles, rodents and fish. They have an iguana that must be 4 feet (including its tail)! Cortney was inthrallecd by a Black Rabbit (she has good taste!) and Devon liked the Bearded Dragons.
When we got home, Davyd entertained the children while Mom and I played with the dress. That's part of what I love about him. He's so good with the kids. He showed Cortney the mice and then let her play on the computer. He showed Devon his swords and taught him some of the names, what they were used for and some moves. Devon and Cortney thing "Uncle" Davyd is cool!
My dress is beautiful but it's going to have to be totally redone. The godets aren't working and the shoulder seams are all screwed up (that'll happen when you mess around with the pattern). I know my mom loves me; she wouldn't sew two dresses (one that I'm not even going to wear) out of chiffon for just any one!

Girly Heat
Why is it that on the weekends, when I'm away from my air conditioned workplace, that its 30+ and during the week, when I'm not in my hot, stuffy apartment, it's a more civilized 20ish? I will never understand.
Saturday was spent being groggy, overtired and doing housework. Mostly icky. My favourite little brother (he's my only little brother) stopped by so he and Davyd could go get tuxes fitted for the wedding. We had a nice chat. I miss him. Luckily he'll be back in the city in September. I must make more of an effort to see him.
Saturday night, Jeanne and I went to Star's to be girly. Mistress made us wonderful Oranage Chicken and Rice for dinner. We ended up going to a late night swim which was very fun, inspite of the creepy guy, who thought we wanted to play with him. Thanks for inviting us along Fox.

Davyd got the data-entry job!!! Yay!
Full-time, permanent, actually related to what he went to college for. Can't get much better than that!

Fabric and Anniversaries
Star and I went to Ikea to get curtains and bedspreads for Aria's newly painted room. We did find stuff. But the blog worthy bit was that I was in Ikea and didn't spend any money! And they have fabric! Gosh, I'm really not feeling myself...
This is my hundredth post! Wow, I yak a lot. Well to honour it (and in homage to James) I'll re-run part of my first post:
Some people say, "You shouldn't tempt Fate."
And for them I can not disagree.
But I never learned nothing from playing it safe.
I say, "Fate should not tempt me!"

Sleepy Maps...
I had hot, sweaty weekend. :P Saturday was spent sleeping (I feel very blessed to be able to sleep in the heat. At least then I don't have to bear it conscious.) The most of the rest of the time (other than when I was in public) was spent in as little cloths as possible (Yay curtains!).
At work, I'm nearly finished the campus maps I've been working on for the better part of two weeks (I can't believe that the library doesn't have any campus maps! We're one of the places people come to get directions (especially because they get into the LRC and can't find their way out again.)). I got tired of trying to explain to people where rooms (that I don't know where they are) are. Hopefully these maps will pay off. I got copies of the architectual drawings from Facilities and shrunk them down because they were on like 11" x 17" paper. Of course that made the writing too small to read, so I whited out all the printing and added my own room ranges. It was lots of piddly work (I love it!). Sometimes I think that most of the skills I use at work I learned in kindergarten...

Well, the invitations have been assembled. Thanks again to y'all who helped. It made it much less tedious. We forgot to take the envelops (one should not be running around like a headless chicken when trying to gather all the things one needs for such a project) so the ones we're mailing still need to be stuffed, but that shouldn't be a big deal. Expect you invites at BPs tonight!

Last evening was my first Dragonboat practice. What a workout. The paddling form is very strange; arms straight, bend forward, dip paddle, sit up while pulling paddal through the water, take paddle out of water when its in line with your hip, repeat. It's hard work. But really fun.
I'm on the Grant MacEwan team and were practicing for the Dragonboat festival Aug 20-22. Y'all should come and cheer. Dragonboats
In other news, Davyd and I are having a "Come Help Us Assemble Our Wedding Invitations" party this evening. If your interested, its a Star and Eric's at 8:30. Sorry about the short notice but there will be Chocolate and Icecream if you can make it. You will also have my eternal gratitude... ;)

I had a FABULOUS weekend.
After much irriation over plans changing (Where we were going, What we were doing), Davyd and I went out to my parents on Friday night. The drive out was nice; I haven't seen the country side that green for many years. Its amazing what the rain has done. As we neared my parents, I started to see wildflowers in the ditches. Tiger lilies, Indian paintbrush, wild roses, clover, yarrow, just to name a few. I love wildflowers, they remind me of picking my mom bouquets when I was little. We also saw several deer but managed not to turn any of them in to deer smear, so it was all good.
We ended up setting up our tent in my dad's shop. It had rained for the past several days and the ground was saturated so setting up on the grass would have been less than ideal. Some how, I had forgotten how muddy it gets in my parents' yard after a rain. I'm not sure how I could have forgotten that. It was one of the banes of my existence growing up; walking out to catch the bus on mud that some how manages to be slippery and sticky at the same time. The shop was nice and dry and cozy.
On Saturday, we arrived at the lake TWO HOURS later than we had arranged to meet Gorra and Stephanie. This is impirical evidence that lateness expands expenetially the more people you have who tend to be late.
eventually, after much waiting for people to have lunch, set up their tents and stand around yaking, we got the canoes onto the lake. (My family has a really hard time with keeping their plans straight. The plan was to be at the lake by 9:00 am, and go canoeing right away.)
The lake was beautiful. Just a slight breeze, partly cloudy sky. We saw loons, osprey, and ducks (KILLER DUCKS!!!). We paddled around the shore of half the lake, lashed the canoes together and floated around, relaxing for a while. We must have been on the lake for about 5 hours. We all got a bit sunburned (Steph's knees were the worst. One must remember to reapply the sunscreen after kneeling in the bottom of a wet canoe.)
We spent the evening sitting around the fire, telling stories, going for a walk, watching two young women go swimming (the water was fairly cold ;) ) and making smores (mmmmm!).
Sadly, by the time we got back to the lake on Sunday, there was a storm rolling in and the water was getting VERY choppy. We decided not to push our luck and stay on (mostly) dry ground. Instead we had lunch and came back to the city in the rain.
It was a good weekend. I highly recommend Carson-Pegasus Provincial Park for boating and camping. Its a beautiful spot.

Well, the river trip has been cancelled. The Athabasca is too high and running too fast to be safe (my mom has a BAD feeling, must trust Mom's bad feelings). With the expected rain, it's only going to get worse. We are still going to go canoeing however (the rented canoes have been paid for and WILL therefore be used). The tentative plan is to go on one of the bigger lakes near my parents' (Probably Carson-Pegasus)on Saturday, camp in my parents yard that night, and canoe on Goose Lake (about 5 miles from Mom's) on Sunday. It may not be as exciting but ending up capsized in the river doesn't sound at all appealing...
Later.

Yesterday afternoon, I walked home in the rain. Usually, I'm not fond of doing so but it was warm and it made me smile. There's something cleansing about a thunder storm...
I'm looking forward to the weekend. Its our canoe trip. Gorra and Stephanie are going with along with a bunch of my relatives and family friends. It should be lots of fun (as long as it doesn't rain too much). I must go shopping this afternoon for supplies.
This week I'm tired. I'm working 7:30 - 3:00 and haven't been getting enough sleep. Have replaced it with caffine...mmmmmm, caffine...

Happy (belated) Canada Day!!
This week I've been sick (BLEK!). Its really just a cold but I HATE having a the sniffles (I'm blaming Gorra). The heat has only made it worse and I've been growlly and bitchy and going to work because at least its air conditioned. Note to self: Don't take Contac-C AND Benellin(sp?) cough syrup at the same time; it causes an awful floaty feeling like your body has disappeared and your heads just floating around by itself.
Yesterday, Davyd, Gorra, Stephanie and I went to see Spiderman 2. It was okay. Everyone else really enjoyed it but about two-thirds of the way through I lost my suspension of disbelief and it just got silly after that. Physicists should not see this movie as it will make them curl up into a fetal position and scream for their mommies. All in all, 3 Carrots out of 5.
After, we went to the Old Spaghetti Factory for supper (always yummy!) and did the traditional trip to Wee Book Inn on Jasper and went to see the fireworks (which were awesome! It seemed they were trying to make up for the duds last year. They had lost of new types (a cool one that split apart and each of the pieces climbed higher and split again). We even found a spot that was fairly good for watching them but not too crowded (I'm not going to tell you where, cuz then I'd have to kill you...)).
All in all it was a pretty good day (except for the cold (but that's getting better)).
